Teach Me How to Two-step, Julie

(Sandy Allen)
I stopped off last evenin' On my way home from work
For relaxation,
little conversation
I had to quench my thirst.
I'd never been to this
country place
Thought I'd take a chance
I wound up there
all night long
Just watchin' these people
dance...
They was all dressed up
like Roy & Dale
Kickin' up their heels,
All strung out on mandolins
Just wild for pedal steels...
Did slap-leather and
a ten-step,
They did an eight-step too
The dance they did
most often,
They only had to count
to two...

But, I never learned
how to two-step -
Never learned how to
buck & wing...
If I drink too much
I get all choked up
When I hear Hank Williams
sing...
I never learned how to
do a country polka
Or the San Antonio stroll...
When I was a kid
we just did what we did -
I'm a child of rock & roll.

'Way back yonder
in the fifties,
I went to dancin' school -
Somehow, I survived it
You know, it really
wasn't cool.
I swear I learned to foxtrot
to cha-cha & to waltz
Just in time for the sixties,
When I forgot 'em all...
'Cause everyone was doin'
the monkey then,
The frugue & the boogaloo -
I spent alotta time
watchin' them,
I didn't know just
what to do...
I got up. I got down.
I let it all hang out...
It was a brand new game
when disco came -
I sat that decade out.
(And that's why)

I never learned how
to two-step,
Never learned how to
buck & wing
If I drink too much
I just might get up
When I hear Hank, Jr. sing...
No, I never learned how
to do a country polka
Or the San Antonio stroll -
When I was a kid
y' just did what y'did
I'm a child of rock & roll.

All dressed up like
Annie Oakley
With a ribbon in her hair,
She danced with
every cowboy -
She was the prettiest
cowgirl there.
That's when I made
my mind up
Just what I had to do...
Now, my ol' pal
you're a good ol' gal
And this is what
I need from you...
(You've got to)

Teach me how to
two-step, Julie
If you are my friend
I had such a good time
last night,
That I'm goin' back
tonight again...
Teach me how to
two-step, Julie
If you have a chance
If I can learn it
before tonight,
I'm gonna ask that girl to
dance...
(t.m.h.t.ts.J)
I really do have to learn
We'll keep it simple
to begin with -
You can teach me how
to turn...
Maybe we can do
the Louie next
If I can learn how to
pivot & vine
Dress me up like
Hopalong Cassidy
And put me in that line...
I wanna be
dancin' in that line.
